Commemorative note on Language Movement

Bangladesh Bank released a commemorative note of Tk 60 denomination yesterday, marking the 60th anniversary of the country's Language Movement. Artist and language movement veteran Murtaza Bashir unveiled the note at a function in the conference hall of the central bank in the morning. Language movement veterans Abdul Matin, Sayed Haider, Protiva Mutshuddi, Ahmed Rafique, Kamal Lohani, Ramoni Mohan Debnath, Ajay Das Gupta, Bangla Academy Director General Shamsuzzaman Khan, Mostafa Monwar, Dhaka University Fine Arts faculty Dean Emdadul Haque Mohammad Matlub Ali, and artists, intellectuals, journalists and civil society members were present at the function chaired by Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr Atiur Rahman. Speaking on the occasion, Murtaza Bashir said, “Language Movement was not only a movement for the mother language but it was also a fight to bring about socioeconomic changes in the country. So, we should keep it in mind round the year.” Atiur said the currency collectors, both at home and abroad, would be able to know about the Language Movement through the commemorative note. The note, bearing the signature of the governor, is now available at the Motijheel office of Bangladesh Bank at Tk 200 (including folder and envelope). The note having the title of '60 Years of Language Movement 1952-2012' will be available at all the branches of the central bank and commercial banks from February 19. Initially, the central bank has printed 10 lakh copies of the note. On December 26, the bank released a commemorative coin and note marking the 40th victory anniversary of Bangladesh and a silver coin marking 90 years of the poem, 'Bidrohi' (rebel) by National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam.
