'Form monitoring committee'

Speakers at a roundtable yesterday urged the government to set up a "Civil Traffic Monitoring Committee" to reduce traffic congestion in the port city. The committee would monitor the activities of the traffic management authorities, including traffic police, and make recommendations to ease the problem, they said. Mayor M Manjur Alam, who was the chief guest, said the Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) had sent two proposals to the government for constructing diversion roads, including one from Chaktai Khal to Bahaddarhat at a cost of Tk 67 crore, in current fiscal year. He also observed that the inter-city bus terminal, truck terminal, and cattle huts should be relocated to avoid traffic jam in the port city. The roundtable on "traffic jam and communication problems in Chittagong" was organised jointly by the Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) and The Independent, an English daily. MA Latif MP, The Independent editor Mahbubul Alam, Dainik Purbokone editor Taslimuddin Chowdhury, Dainik Azadi editor MA Malek and the directors of the CCCI also spoke at the discussion with CCCI senior-vice president Mahabubul Alam in the chair.
