Gharial rescued

A two-foot-long gharial, caught and about to be sold off by a fisherman, was rescued and released in the Padma river on Thursday. The fisherman, Alauddin Ali of Bheramra in Kushtia, caught the critically endangered reptile while fishing in the river around 6:30am and started contacting possible buyers. On information, the local upazila nirbahi officer contacted the divisional forest officer of Social Forestation Department in Kushtia, Hossain Mohammad Nishat, who arranged for the gharial's release in the afternoon. Gharials are listed as Critically Endangered on the Red List of endangered species of animals and plants issued by the World Conservation Union.
