BCL men beat up journo at RU
Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists at Rajshahi University (RU) severely beat up a journalist confining him to a room on the campus early yesterday.
Victim, Nazim Mridha, a RU correspondent of daily New Age and a student of Law and Justice department, was admitted to the university medical centre.
Nazim told The Daily Star that BCL men of Bangabandhu Hall where he resides took to the room of the hall unit BCL convenor Shah Mohammad Selim for publishing a report headlined “Chhatra League forces students to join procession” in his daily.
At one stage, BCL men Selim, Ridoy Ahmed, Sohel Rana, Dev, Asadur Rahman, Tarek Ahmed, Shakil Ahmed, Masud Rana, Selim Hossain, Mushfikur Rahman and Alamin severely beat him up and tortured him mentally for an hour till 1:30am, the victim alleged.
The BCL men also threatened to kill him if he discloses the matter and publishes further report over the torture, he added.
Later, the BCL activists freed him when the hall provost SA Haider asked them after getting the news.
A GD was lodged with Motihar Police Station seeking security of Nazim's life.
Protesting the incident, Rajshahi University Journalists Association (Ruja) demanded immediate punishment to the BCL men and their expulsion from the university as well as from the BCL unit.
Ruja also threatened to go for tougher agitation on the campus if the BCL men are not expelled by 10:00am today.
Contacted, RU Bangabandhu hall unit BCL convenor Selim denied the allegation.
At least 15 journalists were assaulted by the university unit BCL men in the last six months, sources said.
