BCL forces RU students to join procession

Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists of Rajshahi University (RU) unit yesterday compelled general students to participate in a procession to mark the second death anniversary of a fellow worker. Sources said the BCL activists of Shaheed Habibur Rahman Hall and Bangabandhu Hall locked the hall gates from the morning and forcibly took the students to participate in the procession. On information, the hall authorities unlocked the gates around 10:30am. Many resident students of Shaheed Habibur Rahman Hall alleged that they could not took part in their scheduled classes and examinations as they were confined and compelled to take part in the procession by their hall unit BCL men. Likewise, a resident student of Bangabandhu Hall alleged that he was compelled to join the procession, missing his own class presentation. Students residing at Sher-e-Bangla Hall also alleged that BCL men threatened on Tuesday night to drive them out of the hall if they did not participate in the programme. Shaheed Habibur Rahman Hall Provost Dr Shaheed Iqbal said, hearing about incident yesterday, he rushed to the hall and unlocked the gate. BCL RU unit General Secretary Abu Hossain Bipu said they did not ask the activists to compel general students to join the programme. “We will look into the matter,” he added. Proctor Prof Chowdhury Muhammad Zakaria said he was not aware of the incident and that necessary action will be taken after investigating the matter. BCL worker Faruque Hossain was killed in the February 9, 2010 campus violence by Shibir men.
