Ferries to ply Meghna from Feb 9

Unb, Dhaka
The government will reintroduce ferry services on the Meghna River on February 9 for carrying of heavy vehicles, said Communications Minister Obaidul Quader yesterday. “The ferry services will be launched... as the Meghna Bridge has turned risky for the movement of heavy vehicles," he told a four-member BGMEA delegation. The delegation, led by BGMEA president Safiul Islam Mohiuddin, met the minister at the latter's secretariat office and placed their demands. The delegation urged the minister to complete the works for the upgradation of the Dhaka-Chittagong highway to four lanes as soon as possible, as it now takes 12-14 hours to send products to Chittagong port from Dhaka. They also demanded the government widen the Dhaka-Chittagong highway to six lanes, as 90 percent of RMG products are transported through this busy highway for export. The minister, however, said it is not possible for the government to upgrade the highway further right now. He said he visited the construction site of the highway thrice and asked the officials concerned to finish the work before the deadline. “The construction work for turning Dhaka-Chittagong highway into four lanes is going on in full swing. The construction and development of 42km of the highway at different busy points, including Daudkandi, Mirsarai and Shitakunda, will be completed by March 2013”.
