Following a newspaper report, the High Court (HC) yesterday summoned a union parishad chairman of Brahmanbaria on charges of misusing his power and harassing a man through a village court. Md Shah Newaz Khan, chairman of Akhaura south union of Brahmanbaria, will have to appear before the court on February 7 to explain the allegations, as per the order. The court passed the order on a suomoto move following a report published in the daily Manab Zamin on January 29 with a headline “Akhauraie UP Chairman-er Kando (activities of union parishad (UP) chairman at Akhaura)”. According to the report, Shah Newaz earlier in January issued a letter to Amir Miah of Abdullahpur village directing him to appear before the village court led by him in connection with an allegation of forgery in recording a land in his (Amir) name. The chairman also ordered for investigation into the allegation and directed Amir to submit a reply about the allegation to the court by January 23, the report said. Deputy Attorney General ABM Altaf Hossain placed the report to the HC bench of Justice AHM Shamsuddin Choudhury Manik and Justice Jahangir Hossain Selim for an order against Shah Newaz on charge of misusing his power. The bench also issued a rule asking the deputy commissioner and the superintendent of police of Brahmanbaria to explain why they should not be directed to take legal action against the chairman.
