Road accidents kill 16

Sixteen people were killed in road accidents in Dhaka, Gazipur, Naogaon, Sylhet, Jessore and Thakurgaon on Monday and yesterday. In the capital, a bus rammed a rickshaw-van before Balaka Bhaban on Airport Road around 11:30pm on Monday. Airport police said van puller Nurul Islam, 30, died instantly while his passenger Akkas Ali, 70, was declared dead at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Police seized the bus but its driver managed to flee the scene. Fazr Ali, brother-in-law of the van driver, filed a case with Airport Police Station in this connection. Mohammad Sajib, 11, died after being hit by a battery driven auto rickshaw at Mirpur DOHS around 10:30am yesterday. In another incident, Nazrul Islam, 25, a store keeper of Amzil Apparel at Baipail, died on the spot when a Dhaka-bound bus from Naogaon hit his bicycle near the EPZ intersection around 7:30am yesterday. Later, the bus also hit two other ready-made garment (RMG) workers. Hearing the news, workers of Amzil and other apparel factories blocked Nabinagar-Kaliakoir road for two and a half hours, halting traffic movement on the road. The workers also vandalised and set fire to the bus, Badrul Alam, OC Ashulia Police Station, told The Daily Star. The workers withdrew the blockade around 10:30am after law enforcers assured them of taking action against the bus driver. In Gazipur, two workers were killed and 20 others injured as a bus plunged into a roadside ditch in sadar upazila. Police said a Kashimpur-bound bus carrying the workers of Tahmina Garments located at Kashimpur fell into the ditch at Bhabanipur around 8:00am while giving way to a truck. Monirul Islam, 20, a worker of the factory, and Jalal Miah, helper of the bus driver, died instantly. In Chapainawabganj, five people, including two of a family, were killed and two others injured when a bus hit a rickshaw van at Hapania in Naogaon sadar upazila around 7:30pm on Monday. The deceased are van puller Muslim Uddin alias Mukul, 20, and its passengers Kabita Begum, 35, her son Minhaz, 2, Sajjad Hossain, 35, and Rizia Bawya, 45. Agitating locals blockade the highway for about two hours and set fire to the bus after the incident. They removed the barricade when police assured them of taking action against the bus driver and his helper. Staff correspondent from Sylhet reports: Three workers were killed as a truck crashed into a roadside shop on Companiganj-Bholaganj road at Kalasadek in the district yesterday afternoon. Of the deceased, Saju Miah, 35, is of Chunarugaht upazila in Habiganj. Our Benapole correspondent says: A three-wheeler ran over school girl Saleha Khatun Sheela, 6, daughter of Billal Hossain, killing her on the spot at Srirampur in Keshabpur upazila of Jessore district yesterday. Following the accident, local people caught the driver of the vehicle and handed him over to police. In Thakurgaon, Nur Alam, 12, son of late Mokbul Hossain of Salondar village in the sadar upazila, was crushed under the wheels of a tractor in front of Islam Plaza in the town on Monday night.
