Control cars to reduce city gridlock

It is imperative to control the massively growing number of private cars on the city roads to reduce traffic congestion, said speakers at a seminar yesterday. Getting facilities like reducing taxes, natural gas conversion and easy banks loans, a huge number of private cars have already hit the road, becoming one of the main reasons of traffic jam in Dhaka, said Prof Anu Mohammad, member secretary of the National Committee to Protect Oil, Gas, Mineral Resources, Power, and Ports He said it is not possible to change this scenario without any major political change. Janoganer Dhaka Andolon, a social organisation, organised the seminar titled "We want a liveable Dhaka city" at the Jatiya Press Club. Criticising the Dhaka city split, columnist Syed Abul Maksud said everyone should go forward with the demand not to split the city in order to save the city. Prof Serajul Islam Chowdhury said the aim of the War of Liberation was to build the country for its population but it has not happened. The nation is no more functioning keeping the interest of its people in mind, and so is the scenario in Dhaka city, he added. Janoganer Dhaka Andolon Convener M Inamul Haque placed 15-point demand to save the Dhaka city including stopping the split of the Dhaka City Corporation and bringing metro rail, shipping and road under one authority. Other demands included recovering rivers and canals, preparing detailed area plan based on CS map, bringing Savar, Keraniganj, Narayanganj, Rupganj and Gazipur under pubic transport network and making all service organisations accountable to a city government. Architect Shamsul Wares, economist Shapon Adnanan and Arup Roy also addressed among others.
