Ctg BNP procession today, ban withdrawn
The BNP's earlier declared mass-procession programme in the port city yesterday was foiled following an indefinite ban imposed by Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) on all sorts of processions and rallies.
However, CMP withdrew the ban around 9:00pm.
The procession has been postponed and will be observed today, said BNP Chittagong city unit President Ameer Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury at a press conference at the party's port city office at Nasiman Bhaban in Kazir Dewry area yesterday.
Terming the activities of the government 'autocratic', Khasru said, when BNP is trying to come out of the circle of conflicting politics and observe peaceful programmes, the ruling party declares 'artificial' programmes around the same time to foil the latter's programme.
BNP Central Standing Committee member MK Anwar, at the conference, said, fearing people's support for BNP, the government is keeping the party from exercising their democratic rights or observing their democratic programme.
He warned the government to be responsible for any untoward situation if it tries to hinder BNP's mass-procession today.
Khasru said the government is pushing the country's democratic people into a suffocating situation
He also alleged that police raided the houses of some BNP leaders and activists Saturday night.
Meanwhile yesterday, police were vigilant at important intersections of the port city including the BNP office and picked up five activists of the party from in front of the office.
Asked, SM Tanvir Arafat, assistant commissioner (Detective Branch) of CMP, said the men were nabbed for interrogation as they were roaming suspiciously, wearing lungi under their pants.
Police were also present around Jamaat-e-Islami Chittagong city unit office since the morning. CMP sources said the office was also searched but nobody was arrested.
