Staff Correspondent, Rajshahi
Speakers at a meeting suggested involvement of experts from appropriate fields to successfully set up a museum in the city, an initiative taken by Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC). Praising the initiative, they stressed the need for a management policy for the museum so that no misunderstanding develops among those involved and the city dwellers can be enriched with the city's heritage. RCC organised the meeting at Rajshahi Nagar Bhaban on Friday evening. Addressing as the chief guest, RCC Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton said the initiative was taken considering the city's rich heritage and to attract tourists and help researchers. The mayor urged the locals to donate whatever artifacts they might have in their personal collection such as coins, dresses, paintings and books. He said, if needed, RCC would purchase those at a nominal price. A separate room in Rajshahi Nagar Bhaban has been allocated to preserve these artifacts. Moreover, RCC will soon take steps to preserve the city's archaeological sites, he added. The speakers suggested using Bara Kuthi Bhaban, established during the Dutch era, for the museum. Prof Dr Kazi Mustafizur Rahman Khan of Islamic history and culture of Rajshahi University (RU) gave a multimedia presentation on the current condition of the city's ancient buildings and ways to preserve them. RCC Chief Executive Officer Azahar Ali, journalists Fazlul Haque, Liakat Ali, Mustafizur Rahman Khan and Shafikul Islam, RU teachers Prof Chowdhury Sarwar Jahan, Dr Sujit Sarker and Prof Dr Saifuddin Chowdhury and freedom fighters Mohammad Ali Kamal and Nawsher Ali spoke on the occasion. Ward Councillor Ansar Ali, also chairman of RCC standing committee on history and artifacts preservation and tourism development, chaired the meeting.
