Clarification
Mubasshar Hussain, president of the Institute of Architects Bangladesh (IAB), in a clarification to one of his remarks in the report “Building code violated” published on January 25, said an architect is not responsible for a building's structural failure.
He was quoted to have said the signatory architect is fully responsible for the overall supervision of an under-construction building.
Hussain writes an architect is only liable for any failure/damage resulting from architectural design. In the reported incident, it was a structural failure, he adds.
He further writes, "Regarding the issue of an architect putting signature for obtaining approval from Rajuk but otherwise not having any relationship to the project, as per Building Construction Rules 2008 and ...the Code of Conduct of Ethics and Professional Conduct 2010 of the IAB clearly considers this as an unethical and punishable act".
