3 JnU BCL activists arrested
Police arrested three activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League in Kotwali of the city early yesterday in connection with Tuesday's violence on Jagannath University campus.
The arrested are Mahidul Islam, Saifullah Ibne Amin, and Asaduzzaman Shakil.
Police also detained nine other BCL men who were later freed at the request of the JnU authorities.
Sources said police picked up 12 BCL men while raiding different students' messes, but some teachers of the university went to the police station and pressured them to free the nine.
The raids were conducted following a case filed by JnU Proctor Kamal Uddin Ahmed against some 150 students for vandalism and creating anarchy on the campus during clashes between two groups of BCL men.
Sub-inspector Mobarak Ali of Kotwali Police Station said police arrested the students through monitoring of the photographs published in different dailies and video footage of different television channels.
Asked, SI Mobarak said nine of the 12 detainees were freed as the teachers described them as innocent while the rest three were produced before the court and sent to jail.
