A defence witness told a session judge's court yesterday that he saw some unknown jawans of the erstwhile Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) dragging a wounded Major Mamun to 24 rifle battalion during the mutiny on February 25-26, 2009. Major Mamun was killed along with 56 top and mid-ranking army officers including the BDR director general Maj Gen Shakil Ahmed and 17 others in the carnage at the BDR headquarters in Pilkhana. In his deposition, the witness Havildar Habibur Rahman also said he saw two of the accused, subedars Sheikh Ashraf Ali and Ashraf Ali Mridha, arguing over the probable posts they would be awarded if the mutiny was successful. Defense lawyer Shameem Sardar on behalf of subedar Ashraf Ali Mridha, subedar major Gofran Mollik and sepoy Shamim Al Mamun later cross-examined Habibur. Shameem accused Habibur of "giving a deposition he was taught". “What is it that I was taught?” asked Habibur in reply. “Did you claim any post?” asked Shameem. Habibur pointed a finger to the dock of the accused. “If I claimed a post, I would be there,” he said. The court, set up at Bakshibazar in the city's Alia Madrasa, will resume tomorrow.
