The government is going to take the largest ever-multipurpose agricultural research project on a 1,044 acre-land in the southern part of the country to develop stress tolerant crop varieties for increasing crop production significantly. Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury told The Daily Star that nearly Tk 246 crore-project will be implemented in an isolated Char at Dashmina in Patuakhali district using the government's fund. The project will be placed at the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec) meeting today for approval. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will chair the meeting. If the project is approved it would be the largest ever agricultural project since the independence of the country. “All kinds of research for the development of agriculture will be conducted there,” said the agriculture minister adding, “Our target is to create a variety of crop seeds that can fight against different natural adversities like salinity, draught and storm.” Matiya said if the project is implemented, it would have a significant improvement in food production in the southern region of the country which currently faces a shortfall in crop production due to those natural adversities.
