Akhaura mayoral by-election today
By-election to the mayoral post of Akhaura municipality under Brahmanbaria district will be held today.
The post fell vacant following death of BNP-backed mayor NM Hasan Khan on October 14 last year.
Six candidates are in the election race. They are AL-backed Takjil Khalifa Kajol (mike), rebel AL candidate Mainul Islam (pineapple), BNP-supported Joynal Abedeen (spectacles), rebel BNP candidate Hasib Humayun (inkpot and pen), and independent candidates Humayun Kabir (lock) and Farook Ahmed (wall clock) .
As many as 20,762 voters are expected to exercise their right to franchise at 56 polling booths of 10 centres. Local administration has taken all necessary measures to ensure a free, fair election.
Contacted, Returning Officer Kazi Muhammad Mozammel Haque said police, ansars and members of the Armed Police Battalion will be on-duty at each of the 10 polling centres.
Rab personnel will patrol the municipality area while several units of the striking force will remain on alert at different points, he added.
During electioneering, district level leaders of both AL and BNP were seen working for their party-backed candidates while local leaders and workers of the two parties campaigned for the rebel candidates.
Two local BNP leaders, preferring anonymity said though several district leaders have made frequent visits to different areas of the municipality to woo voters for party-backed candidate Joynal Abedeen, upazila unit leaders and workers sought votes for rebel candidate Hasib Humayun.
