Woman jailed for child abduction

A tribunal here on Wednesday sentenced a woman to 14 years' rigorous imprisonment (RI) for abducting a girl in 2008. The convict was identified as Shahinur Akter Ankhi, daughter of Amru Khan of Baligaon village in Kuliarchar upazila. The tribunal also fined the convict Tk 5,000, in default, to suffer six months RI more. According to the prosecution, Ankhi abducted an eight-year-old girl from Kharkamara village in the upazila alluring her to teach dance on February 28, 2008. Hearing the girl's cry, local people caught Ankhi and took her to the local UP chairman who handed her over to police. Later, a case was filed in this connection. After examining the records and witnesses, Judge M Rabiul Hasan of Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal handed down the verdict. In Benapole, Jessore, criminals abducted a teenage girl on her way to school in Jhikargachha upazila yesterday morning. Sub Inspector Enamul Haque of Jhikargachha PS quoting witnesses said, a gang led by Russell, son of Abdul Gani of Laxmipur village waylaid the girl, a class IX student of local of ML Pilot School, while she was going to school. Later, they picked up the girl at gunpoint in a private car and took her to an unknown place. The victim's family filed a case with the police.
