Fourteen die in road accidents
Fourteen people were killed and five injured in separate road accidents in Gazipur, Mymensingh, Sylhet, Sirajganj, Munshiganj and Jhenidah yesterday and Sunday.
In Gazipur, a Tangail-bound bus from Dhaka hit an auto-rickshaw on the Dhaka-Tangail highway at Shafipur in Kaliakoir upazila around 1:30pm yesterday.
Driver and three passengers of the auto-rickshaw died on the spot, said Abul Hossain, additional police super of Gazipur.
One of the deceased was identified as Abdul Majid.
Our correspondent from Mymensingh reports: Three people including a policeman were killed and three others injured in a road accident at Laxmipur on Mymensingh-Phulbaria road in Phulbaria upazila yesterday afternoon.
The victims are Bikash Chandra Shil, 48, a sub-inspector of Phulbaria police station, hailing from Manikganj district; Joynal, 35, driver of a CNG-run auto-rickshaw, hailing from Bailajan village in Phulbaria upazila; and Noorjahan, 40.
The injured are Abdul Gani, 50, a police constable; Md Shahjahan, 45; and his daughter Sharmin, 20, of Kushmail village in Phulbaria.
Bikash was returning to Phulbaria from Mymensingh with Sharmin, a victim of a case, her parents Shahjahan and Noorjahan and the constable on the auto-rickshaw, said Kazi Saidur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Phulbaria Police Station.
A Mymensingh-bound four-wheeler public transport collided head on with the auto-rickshaw around 2:30pm.
Bikash and Joynal succumbed to their injuries on way to Mymensingh Medical College and Hospital (MMCH) while Noorjahan died there around 5:00pm. The others injured are undergoing treatment.
Our correspondent from Sylhet reports: Three people were killed in separate road accidents at Haritala of Madhabpur upazila on Dhaka-Sylhet highway and in the district town here yesterday afternoon.
The deceased are Humayun Kabir, 42, of Sundarpur under Madhabpur upazila; Abdul Maleque Sarder, 45, of Olipur under Habiganj sadar upazila; and Khoshbanu, 35.
Humayun and Maleque died when a bus hit the motorcycle they were riding on the highway around 5:00pm, said Officer-in-Charge Ali Farid of Shaistaganj Highway Police.
Police seized the bus but its driver fled.
In another accident, Khoshbanu, a visually impaired beggar, died in Habiganj sadar hospital yesterday morning. She was earlier critically injured as a battery run three-wheeler hit her on Sunday afternoon while she was crossing a road in the district town.
Our Sirajganj correspondent reports: A Dhaka-bound bus from Sirajganj rammed a motorcycle at Kasiahata in sadar upazila around 5:30am yesterday, killing the rider on the spot while injuring another.
The deceased is Nurul Islam alias Nasir Uddin, 35, son of Ishaq Ali of Pashchim Jotpara village in Chowhali upazila of the district.
The injured, whose identity could not be known immediately, was taken to Sirajganj General Hospital where he later died, said Shaheed Alam, officer-in-charge of Sirajganj Sadar Police Station.
Abu Zafar, officer-in-charge of Chowhali Police Station, said Nurul Islam was a fugitive.
A case was lodged with Sadar Police Station in this connection.
Meanwhile, a salon employee died after a bus ploughed through a roadside salon in Tongibari upazila of Munshiganj.
The incident took place when a helper of the bus, parked in Karibari bus stand area, suddenly pressed the accelerator in the driver's absence, said Khalid Hossain, sub-inspector (SI) of Tongibari Police Station.
After ploughing through the salon and two other shops, the bus plunged into a ditch.
Salon employee Ramkrisna Biswas, son of late Parimol Biswas of Jasholong village in the upazila, died on the spot, the SI said. The body was sent to Munshiganj General Hospital.
Police detained the helper Kader Khan in this connection.
Our correspondent from Jhenidah adds: A motorcyclist was killed and two others were injured in a road accident here on Sunday night.
The deceased is Abdur Razzaque, 55, son of late Mokshed Ali of Shishirkundu village under Kotchandpur upazila of the district while the injured are Shahin Ali, 35, of Chasra village, and Prodip Kumar, 30, a waiter of Kaliganj town.
A Kaliganj-bound truck knocked over a motorcycle carrying the three near Patibila bus stand under Kaliganj upazila around 3:00pm, said Officer-in-Charge (OC) AKM Faruk Hossain of Kaliganj Police Station.
Locals rushed them to Kaliganj local health complex where doctors referred them to Jessore Sadar Hospital. Razzaque succumbed to his injures around 8:00pm.
