Alleged Assault on Police
10 BCL men held, sued in Ghatail
Police on Friday night arrested 10 leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) in Ghatail upazila on charge of assaulting law enforcers.
The arrestees are Ghatail upazila unit general secretary of BCL Kofilur Rahman Bhutan, 25, and upazila BCL activists Rakib Ahmed, 18, Faruque Miah, 19, Mohammad Liton, 20, Saiful Islam, 19, Russel Ahmed, 20, Lutfar Rahman, 20, Apu Khan, 18, Sajal Ahmed, 21, and Palash Miah, 18.
Earlier, two groups of BCL leaders and activists locked in clash in the busy market area of the upazila headquarters at around 8:30pm, police and witnesses said.
Shop owners of the market pulled down shutters while the panic-stricken Eid shoppers fled away from the area, they said.
Being informed, a police team from Ghatail police station rushed to the spot and held several BCL men from the spot.
At this, the BCL men assaulted officer-in-charge (OC) of Ghatail PS Mominur Rahman and constable Sohel Rana.
Later the same police team arrested the 10 BCL leaders and activists from there and took them to the police station.
Contacted, Ghatail OC Mominur Rahman yesterday said two cases--one for barring law enforcers from performing professional duties and another for using lethal weapons--were filed against the BCL men.
