District health administration yesterday sealed the private clinic at Ishwardi upazila headquarters where two patients died on Saturday night allegedly due to wrong treatment. In the face of strong protest by locals and relatives of the patients, the authorities concerned on Sunday formed a five-member committee headed by Civil Surgeon Rajiul Alam to investigate the matter. After investigation, the committee found the clinic, Islamia Community Hospital, was not following health rules. The civil surgeon quoted the probe report as saying that there were no permanent doctors and nurses at the clinic. The clinic authorities were providing treatment to the patients, hiring doctors from different health centres. “We sealed the clinic on charge of violating heath rules,” he added. Several hundred people yesterday formed a human chain at Ishwardi Station Road demanding arrest and punishment of the owner of Islamia Community Hospital and the doctors responsible for the death of two housewives at the private clinic. They alleged that two housewives died at the clinic in a day and three others in a month due to wrong treatment. But the authorities concerned have not taken any action against the persons responsible, they said, blaming Dr Fatema Siddik for the death of the two on Saturday night. The agitating locals demanded punishment to the doctor and the hospital authorities. Two housewives, Rani Khatun, 28, wife of Md Shahinur Rahman of Ishwardi Airport Road and Masuma Khatun, 35 wife of Abdul Hakim Titu of Patilakhali village in the upazila, died after caesareans at the private clinic. Locals and relatives alleged wrong treatment behind the death of the two and vandalised the clinic on Sunday.
