Both allegedly by husbands, in-laws for dowry

Two housewives were murdered allegedly by husbands in Sirajganj and Sunamganj districts for dowry on Monday. A woman was burnt to death allegedly by her husband and in-laws at Batia village under Shahjadpur upazila of Sirajganj Monday evening. The victim was identified as Beli Khatun, 20, wife of Anwar Hossain of the same village and mother of a daughter, reports a correspondent. According to police, Beli, daughter of Yousuf Ali of Char Narina village was married off with Anwar three years ago. During the marriage Yousuf Ali paid Anwar and his family Tk 65 thousand as dowry. But Anwar and his family members recently started to torture Beli for another Tk 50 thousand. Yousuf Ali told this correspondent that Anwar beat up Beli mercilessly over the matter. Later her in-laws confined her to a room and set her afire after pouring kerosene on her person. Locals rescued her and sent her to hospital, but she succumbed to her injuries on the way to hospital. Yousuf Ali filed a case with Shahjadpur police station under Women and Child Repression Prevention Act accusing eight people including Beli's husband and in-laws. In Sunamganj, a housewife who was tortured allegedly by her husband and in-laws for dowry, died at Mamudnagar village in Dharampasha upazila Monday. The deceased was identified as Ripa Akther, reports UNB. Sources said Ripa was married off with Russel of Nurpur village of Dharampasha upazila two years back. Russel and his family members used to torture her to bring dowry since the marriage. As Ripa was seriously injured in torture, her in-laws took her to Mamudnagar village by a trawler and left her at a river terminal near her parental house.. Her relatives admitted her to upazila health complex on Saturday. She succumbed to her injuries on way to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital on Monday.
