One killed, 4 injured as AL, BNP men clash in Meherpur

A man was killed and four others were injured in a clash between the supporters of Awami League (AL) and BNP at Chargoal village in Gangni upazila of Meherpur yesterday. The dead was identified as Ilias Hossain, 25, a supporter of local AL unit Police quoted local people as saying that AL leader Abu Taher and his men had an altercation with BNP supporters Golam Ali and Akbar Ali of the village at around 10:30am over Saharbati Union Parishad election held in June this year. At around 11:30am, the rival groups equipped with firearms, bombs and sharp weapons attacked each other, leaving at least four people from both sides injured. At one stage, BNP men hurled two bombs on their rivals, leaving AL supporter Ilias Hossain critically injured. Bomb blew off the left side of Ilias' body. He was taken to a local clinic where the doctors declared him dead. The injured were given first aid at the clinic. Being informed, police rushed to the spot, dispersed the clashing groups and brought the situation under control. No one was arrested in connection with the incident as of 4:00pm yesterday. Additional police have been deployed at the village to avert any further clash.
