Bail prayer of BCL men rejected
Ten Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists of Rajshahi University (RU) unit were sent to jail yesterday in connection with a case filed against them on charge of killing of a student on August 15, 2010 on the campus.
Nasirullah Nasim of history department was killed following a dispute over iftar distribution on the occasion of National Mourning Day.
Metropolitan Magistrate FM Mezbah Ul Haque yesterday turned down their bail prayers and sent them to jail after they appeared before the court at around 2:00pm.
The court also asked them to appear before the court on August 25, 2011 for next hearing.
The detainees are Zahirul Islam of public administration department, Lutfur Rahman of zoology, Zahidul Islam of social work department, Ruhul Amin of political science, Moshiur Rahman of psychology, Toufiqul Islam of Bangla department, Sayed Aktar of political science, Arifur Rahman of mass communication and journalism, Khalid Hossain Nayan of management department, and Imtiaz Zaman of geography department.
Nasim, a resident of Shah Makhdoom Hall, was beaten up by BCL men following a dispute over distribution of iftar among the students of the hall on the occasion of National Mourning Day on August 15, 2010. They also pushed him (Nasim) down from the first floor of the hall.
Critically injured Nasim was first admitted to Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital and then shifted to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital where he died on August 23.
Following the incident, Azam Ali, a roommate and friend of Nasim filed a case with Motihar police station on August 25, 2010 accusing the aforesaid ten BCL men.
