Barguna Clash with Fishermen

Coast guards withdrawn

Ten coast guards of Padma camp were withdrawn yesterday following a clash between fishermen and coast guard members in Patharghata upazila of Barguna district on Friday. Lt Harunur Rashid, commander of Patharghata coast guard, said that the ten were attached to Patharghata station after their withdrawal. The decision was taken after DC Mujibur Rahman, SP Mahbub Hakim and coast guard southern zone commander Saidur Rahman visited the spot. A departmental investigation is being conducted into the incident, sources said. At least 20 people were injured, three with bullet, in a clash between fishermen and coast guard members at Padma sluice gate in Patharghata upazila on Friday morning over seizure of illegal fishing nets. The withdrawn team has been shifted from Barguna district as a new team replaced them yesterday. Patharghata Sadar union chairman Asaduzzaman Asad said Tk 10,000, on behalf of coast guards, has been given for treatment of the injured fishermen. Meanwhile, traders, fishermen and local people demanded investigation into the clash and punishment of the coast guard members.
