Complainant of a robbery case has been killed in Rangpur Sadar upazila.
Seeing the body of the deceased, Lutfar Rahman, 40, son of Abu Taleb of Hazirhat Uttom area under Sadar upazila, hanging from an electric tower at Hajirhat in Rangpur Sadar upazila at about 8:00am yesterday, villagers informed his relatives.
Family members alleged that robbers in collaboartion with Rangpur Kotwali police station sub-inspector (SI) Ahsan Habib, also IO of the robbery case, killed him and hung the body from the tower.
The aggrieved villagers blocked Rangpur-Dinajpur highway from 10:00am to 12:00am, making hundreds of vehicles stranded on both sides.
When police went there the villagers became furious and injured SI Ahsan Habib.
Police later took Lutfar's body to Rangpur Medical College Hospital morgue.
"One and a half months ago, robbers looted about six lakh taka after injuring my son Lutfar with sharp weapons at his house. He lodged a case against Bachchu Miah and some other unidentified people of the area with Kotwali police station," said Latifa Begum, mother of the victim.
Lutfar Rahman, a tobacco dealer, drew money from bank the day before the robbery, said his family members.
"On Sunday, SI Ahsan Habib over cell phone called Lutfar to give evidence to him against the robbers. After receiving the call he started from his house at about 11:00am for the police station but he never returned," said Lutfar's wife Mohsina Begum.
Earlier on Saturday, Lutfar was called to the police station and came home at night with the help of police, she added.
Latifa and Mohsina alleged that the robbers in collaboration with the SI killed Lutfar on Sunday night and hung his body from the electric tower.
Officer in charge of Kotwali police station Altab Hossain said, "IO Ahsan Habib called Lutfur over phone to appear at the police station for giving evidence but he did not come. Ahsan Habib has no connection with the killing. But I do not rule out the involvement of the accused in the robbery case with this incident."
