Teachers of Bangladesh Agriculture University (BAU) yesterday called off their class and examination boycott programme as the authorities concerned agreed to take punitive measures against the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists who attacked a silent procession of teachers on Monday last. The decision came at a meeting of BAU Teachers' Association (BAUTA) held at microbiology and hygiene department at about 12:00 noon yesterday. As many as 200 teachers were present at the meeting. BAUTA general secretary Prof Dr Md Shamsul Alam said that they would take classes as well as examinations wearing black badges until the culprits are brought to book. Police arrested Ahsan Habib, a student of agriculture faculty in this connection on 10 August. Meanwhile, the second probe committee formed to investigate the incident wanted three more days for investigation. 'We need more time to investigate the incident' said head of the probe body Prof Dr Mohammad Shamsuddin. 'We are investigating the incident and we hope to submit our report on Wednesday', he said. BAU vice-chancellor Prof Dr Md Rafiqul Haque said, 'We shall give exemplary punishment to the culprits on the basis of the probe committee report'. On Monday, the teachers came under attack following handing over of two BCL activists, Noor Mohammad and Arif, to police by the proctor. The two snatched a mobile phone from a visitor at the university's botanical garden. At least 20 teachers were injured by the BCL activists who also vandalised the administrative building and a university bus. They also set fire to two motorbikes.
