BNP threatens movement after Eid
The main opposition BNP yesterday threatened to wage a tougher anti-government movement after the Eid-ul-Fitr, forging a greater unity with the like-minded parties.
Addressing a rally in front of the party's central office in the capital, BNP acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said they will finalise the outline of the unity with like-minded parties after the Eid.
“BNP, with the support of the people, will compel the government to quit the power and withdraw cases filed against its Chairperson Khaleda Zia,” he said.
As part of a two-day demonstration programme declared on Tuesday, BNP organised the rally protesting the graft case recently filed against its chairperson.
The Anti-Corruption Commission sued Khaleda Zia, also the former prime minister, and three others for abusing power in setting up a charitable trust named after late president Ziaur Rahman, founder of the BNP.
Alamgir claimed the case was filed against the party chairperson as per the prime minister's instruction. “Though, the prime minister herself withdrew 15 cases, including the one for Bangabandhu Foundation, filed against her despite having strong evidences,” he said.
“The government intends to frighten her [Khaleda], but they will not be able to keep her away from the anti-government movement,” he said.
BNP Standing Committee Member Nazrul Islam Khan, its Vice-Chairman Abdullah Al Noman, among others, spoke on the occasion with party's city unit convener Mayor Sadeque Hossain Khoka in the chair.
BNP-LDP MEETING
Earlier in the morning, Alamgir held a meeting with Prof Jahanara Begum, secretary general of Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), to discuss the formation of a greater anti-government unity.
On July 20, both the parties agreed to forge the unity to face some key political issues.
Emerging from the meeting, the BNP leader said his party will finalise the outline of the greater unity after the Eid-ul-Fitr while Jahanara hoped that the BNP-led movement will become stronger if the like-minded parties are united soon.
The hour-long meeting began at the LDP presidium member Redwan Ahmed's Uttara residence around 11:00am.
