Cultivation of Aman on about 1,000 acres of land at Bollarpar village under Gangachhara upazila has suffered a serious blow due to water logging caused by a dyke built at the outlet of a culvert to facilitate fish farming. The affected farmers said the adverse situation has been created as Shafiqul Islam, one of the influential people of the area, built the dyke at the outlet of the culvert to cultivate fish in a nearby water body. They said transplanted Aman on about 150 acres of land and Aman seedbeds have gone under water. “We submitted memorandums to Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mahmudul Islam, local MP Asif Shariar and Union Parishad Chairman Anwarul Islam to take immediate steps to remove the dyke from the outlet of the culvert, but to no effect,” the farmers said. Aninul Islam, a farmer of the village, said he could not transplant Aman as seedlings on three acres of his land got damaged due to water logging. Shahidul Islam, another farmer of the village, said transplanted Aman on four acres of his land has gone under water. Upazila nirbahi officer told this correspondent that he asked the UP chaiman and members to resolve the crisis two days ago. “I think they will immediately solve the problem through arbitration,” the UNO added. Contacted, UP Chairman Anwarul Islam said he asked Shafiqul to sit with the villagers to resolve the crisis.
