Pirates loot trawler, injure fishermen

Pirates raided a trawler, injured at least 10 fishermen and looted Tk 5 lakh from them at Satiartala in the river Meghna under Sarail upazila Saturday midnight. The injured are Mantu Barman, 25, Paritosh Barman, 24, Habrindu Barman, 42, Bimol Barman, 22, Ajit Barman, 32, Anish Barman, 28, Ranjit Barman, 60, Mithu Barman, 42, Tapan Barman, 40 and Bimal Barman. Police quoting the victims said, pirates coming in a trawler attacked the fishermen who were returning home after selling their fishes at Bhairab fish depot at night. The gang stabbed them indiscriminately and looted Tk 5 lakh from them. At one stage they threw two fishermen into the river. One of them was rescued in critical condition while the other remained missing. The injured were admitted to the upzila health complex and local private clinics. Meanwhile, five abducted fishermen could not be rescued till yesterday morning, four days into their abduction for ransom from Meghna River. Sources said, a gang of armed pirates, led by notorious Nizam 'Dakat', swooped on 15 trawlers and mercilessly beat up fishermen who were fishing at Char Gazaria and Telirchar of Ramgati upazila of Laxmipur and Moulvirchar in Hatiya Channel in Noakhali on Thursday. The gang looted cash, mobile phones, fish, fishing nets and other valuables. They also abducted five fishermen and took away the trawlers. Since abduction on Thursday, Rahim Majhi, Mia Majhi, Abdul Majhi and two other fishermen remained untraced. Their abductors told other fishermen before leaving that they would be freed on payment of ransom.
