25 injured as people of past, present UP chairmen clash
21 shops looted, 2 torched in Moulvibazar
At least 25 people were injured and 21 shops looted during a clash between the supporters of the incumbent and immediate past chairmen of Panchgaon Union Parishad (UP) at Modhur Bazaar under Rajnagar upazila on Friday night.
Police and local people said former chairman Shamsun Nur Azad's men had an altercation with some supporters of UP chairman Mihir Kanti Das over the election to the UP held in June this year at around 7:30pm.
Hearing the news, the supporters of Mihir and Azad from nearby villages came to the bazaar and attacked each other. At least 25 people from both sides were injured during the clash that continued for two hours.
The clashing groups looted 21 shops and set fire to two others at the bazaar. Shop owners claimed that goods worth Tk 40 lakh were taken away from their shops.
Being informed, fire fighters from Moulvibazar rushed to the spot and extinguished the blaze at around 11:00pm.
Law enforcers from Rajnagar police station reached the spot at around 10:00pm, dispersed the feuding groups and brought the situation under control.
Of the injured, 19 were admitted to Rajnagar upazila health complex while the rest given first aid at the hospital.
In Habiganj, at least 50 people were injured in a clash between two groups of villagers at Kalni village in Sadar upazila yesterday.
Police and witnesses said the clash ensued between supporters of UP members Abdur Razzaq and Didar Hossain Mosha following previous enmity, reports UNB.
Both groups, equipped with lethal weapons, attacked each other at about 6:00 am, leaving 50 people injured during the two-hour-long clash.
Among the injured, two people were rushed to Osmani Medical College and Hospital while 30 others to Habiganj Modern Hospital.
