Son finally files a case
Staff Correspondent, Sylhet
As police could not trace out the 'missing' senior lawyer in 20 days, advocate Shamsul Islam Chowdhury's son filed a case with the Sylhet Kotwali PS Thursday night. Mahmud Chowdhury, also an officer of the state-run Bangladesh Krishi Bank, in his case suspected involvement of his younger brother and wife in the matter as they had a 'strained relation' with the 90-year-old lawyer. Shamsul Islam went 'missing' 17 July night. He left his mobile phone set, spectacle and walking cane at his house in city's Mir Bakshtala area. Contacted, Mahmud told this correspondent yesterday afternoon that none but his younger brother Mashhud Chowdhury alias Munna was there at the house at that time. Father barred Munna and his wife off from coming to the house a few months ago for disobedience, he said. But Munna came home in the night of Shab-e Barat on 17 July. The same day, Chowdhury went out of his house to remain 'missing' till date, he said. Meantime, police and Rab got involved with the investigation. Visiting the house, Rab asked Munna to appear before them, but he went into hiding on 20 July, raising questions among family members and others. "I suspect Munna and his wife know everything as to what actually happened to our father, Mahmud said. Sylhet District Bar Association president EU Shahidul Islam expressed concern over the incident and said the law enforcement agencies should take immediate measures to trace out the elderly lawyer. The association at a meeting on 21 July called upon the lawmen to unearth the 'mystery' behind the incident.
