Staff Correspondent, Sylhet
Officials of the Department of Environment (DoE) in a drive in Bholaganj stone quarry area in Companiganj upazila seized at least 20 illegally run excavators in the last two days. The DoE yesterday also filed 28 cases on charge of running those without any permission or license, sources said. Deputy Director, DoE, Sylhet Md Zillur Rahman told this correspondent yesterday that organised groups had long been engaged in stone collection from the Dholoi river bed in connivance with some businessmen and influential people. They had been engaged in stone extraction from even 60 to 70 feet depth using mechanised excavators threatening the environment. The river course is also changing due to the unplanned and indiscriminate stone collection, he said.
