Snakebites create panic in 4 villages of Patuakhali
Frequent snakebites have created panic among people of four villages under Kalapara upazila.
At least two women died and more than 11 were injured in four days from Thursday to Sunday last.
Locals said, presence of snakes have seriously increased spreading fear among people of Fatehpur, Doulatpur, Jharakhali and Adompur -- four villages of Nilganj union.
Rabeya Begum, 25, a pregnant housewife of Fatehpur village died as a snake bit her on Thursday night while sleeping in her bedroom. She died at about 8:00am in the morning.
Same night Renu Begum, 54, another housewife of Jharakhali village also died of snakebite.
Those who were injured in separate incidents are Sohel Howlader, 18, Halim Howlader, 70, Anjira Begum, 55, Nargis Begum, 15, Hasina Begum, 28, Hanufa Begum, 40, Salma Begum, 18, Aklima Begum, 36, Rahima Begum, 20, Salma Begum, 22 and Al-Amin, 18.
Many of the injured were treated by two local snake charmers Badiuzzaman and Imam Hossain.
Local people arranged a doa mahfil at Fatehpur Forkania Madrassa after Asr prayers on Sunday seeking divine blessings to get rid of snakes.
Contacted, Dr Zahirul Islam, medical officer (MO) at Kalapara upazila health complex said that snakes were looking for shelters at dwelling houses as their living places went under water due to heavy rain.
Dedare Alam Mohammad Maksud Chowdhury, UNO Kalapara upazila said a medical team will be sent to those villages soon.
