Aggrieved leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) Sylhet district and city units have rejected the newly formed committees of the two units, alleging that these are comprised of some non-students, married people, listed criminals and accused in murder cases. They raised the allegations at a press conference at Sylhet Press club on Sunday and demanded immediate cancellation of the committees announced on July 11. The aggrieved BCL men urged the central committee to form new bodies of Sylhet district and city units as soon as possible with genuine students. In the written statement, they alleged that Pankaj Purkayostha, who was expelled from city unit on charge of his involvement in the killing of BCL activist Udayendu Singha Polash last year, has been made district BCL president. Non-student Hiron Mahmud Nipu has been made vice-president of the committee. A photo carried by local and national newspapers on July 29 showed that Nipu was carrying arms at an AL rally in the city the day before, the statement said. Besides, non-student Farhad Hossain khan and local businessmen Selim Chowdhuiry have been made general secretary and vice-president of the district committee. Zainal Abedin Diamond, also an accused in Udayendu Singha Polash murder case, timber trader Shahinur Rahman Shahin and shop employee Nozib Ali have been included in the committee. In the city committee, Ekramul Hasan, an employee of a pharmaceutical company and and Ali Kamal Sumon, a hotel manager, have been made vice-president and office secretary of the unit. Two accused in mugging cases--Misbah Azad and Ruhul Talukder-have also been given portfolios in the committee, the BCL men told the press conference. They further alleged that an armed gang led by former district BCL leader Ranjit Sarker tried to foil the July 28 public meeting in presence of the local and central leaders including Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid. “We demand immediate arrest of Ranjit and his associates for tarnishing the image of the ruling party,” they said. Former president of BCL district unit Zaglu Chowdhury and former joint secretary of the district committee Abdur Rakib Bablu and former leader Farid Ahmed Imon were, among others, present at the conference. Later, the aggrieved BCL men announced new BCL district committee with Farid Ahmed Imon and Mehdi Hasan Foyez as president and general secretary. They also made Zahirul Islam Ripon and Md Polash Chowdhury as president and general secretary of the city unit.
