Flood engulfs fresh areas in Lalmonirhat
With inundation of fresh areas, flood situation in five upazilas of Lalmonirhat districts further worsened yesterday.
Most parts of the 20 villages in the upazilas and at Teesta and Dharla river basins went under water yesterday, marooning several thousand people.
The flood affected areas are Bongerbari, Sarkerbari and Bawra villages in Patgram upazila, Goddimari, Dowani, Sindurna, Dawabari and Paruliya villages in Hatibandha upazila, Votmari, Char Kakina, Rudreshewar and Jamirbari villages in Kaliganj upazila, Kadomtola, Balapara and Gobordhan villages in Aditmari upazila, Kurul, Mogholhat, Kulaghat, Bowalmari, Rajpur, Kalmati, Khuniya Gachh, Gokunda, Milon Bazar villages in Lalmonirhat Sadar upazila.
Lalmonirhat Water Development Board sources said heavy rain and on-rush of water from hills across the border have triggered flash flood in the district.
While visiting the flood affected Paruliya village in Hatibandha upazila yesterday, this correspondent found most areas under knee deep water. Many of the villagers took shelter on roads and WDB embankment.
Jamal Uddin of Paruliya village said heavy rain in the last three days and water from upstream overflowed Teesta on Saturday morning triggering flood in the area.
Another villager Mubarak said,”Flood water entered all houses at the village. So, we have taken shelter on road.”
Teesta and Dharla rivers were flowing only one centimetre danger the danger level yesterday noon. “The water levels in both the rivers are increasing fast,” WDB official said.
