Punishment to Lama killers demanded

Our Correspondent, Rangamati
Indigenous leaders have warned of tough movement if the authorities fail to ensure punishment to the killers of three indigenous men at Rupashipara village in Lama upazila under Bandarban district on Saturday. At a rally organised by Pahari Chhatra Parishad (PCP), student front of Parbatya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samity (PCJSS), and Hill Women's Federation (HWF) on the premises of Rangamati deputy commissioner's office yesterday, they also demanded trial of all murder and rape incidents in hills. On Saturday noon, a few criminals made a desperate attempt to rape an indigenous woman at Rupashipara village under Rupashipara union in Lama upazila. Hearing her scream, Aung Sha Marma, 62, Hamu Sing, 35, and his five-year-old son Maungnuching came to her rescue. The targeted woman managed to flee but the criminals stabbed to death the three men to vent their wrath. Police arrested Mohammad Musa for his suspected involvement with the brutal incident. At yesterday's rally, the PCP and HWF leaders said indigenous people are becoming victim of murder and rape by Bangalee settlers. Such heinous crimes would not go unabated in the hills if the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) peace accord was implemented in full, they said. They put up a seven-point demand including judicial inquiry and punishment of the Saturday's killers, arrangement of appropriate compensation for the victims' families, judicial investigation into all such incidents, rehabilitation the settler Bangalees outside the CHT, removal of all makeshift army camps from hills, full implementation of the CHT peace deal without delay and constitutional recognition to the indigenous people as 'indigenous'. Among others, PCJSS district unit Secretary Nilutpal Khisa, former PCP central Secretary and member of central PCJSS Udoyan Tripura and HWF central Secretary Suprova Chakma, addressed the rally.
