10 hurt as rival AL men clash

At least 10 people were injured as two factions of local Awami League clashed in the city ahead of a public rally jointly organised by AL district and city units yesterday. The Injured include SCC ward councillor Abdur Rakib Bablu, also a former BCL leader, BCL activist Tarek and Swechchasebok League leader Aftab Hossain. Aftab and Tarek were admitted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College and Hospital while the rest given first aid. Witnesses said the two rival groups, one led by Sadar Upazila Parishad Chairman Ashfaque Ahmed, also the former joint secretary of AL Sadar upazila unit, and the other by AL district unit General Secretary Iftekhar Hossain Shamim, clashed over taking control of the meeting venue at around 4:00pm. Both sides equipped with sticks, iron rods and billhooks chased each other at Court Point and Hasan Market areas for half an hour. Police later brought the situation under control. The meeting remained suspended for an hour and resumed at 5:00pm. Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid addressed the meeting with city AL chief and SCC Mayor Badar uddin Ahmed Kamran in the chair.
