Many areas of Madaripur town get waterlogged

Low-lying areas in Madaripur municipal area have been flooded due to heavy downpour in the last three to four days. The most affected areas are Darga Sharif, Kali Bari, Ukil Para on the west of Panichhatra Poura Bhaban and Thakur Bari on the east, Kheloar Para and Das Bari. A few thousand people of these areas are facing water logging problem during the rainy season for the last few years, the residents alleged. Arif Hossain, a schoolboy of Ukil Para said they cannot attend school because of floating filth on the flooded road. Housewife Sabita Das in Panichhatra area said she is witnessing this problem every rainy season since her marriage a few years ago. Although the villages are out of this ordeal, people of the municipality area are suffering a lot, sometimes amid embarrassment, she said. Sabina Yasmin, headmistress of Darogakhola Government Primary School told this correspondent that her students were getting infected with various kinds of water borne diseases due to the polluted water. The number of students decrease during the rainy season as the schools of the area remain inundated, she added. Newly elected mayor of Madaripur municipality Khalid Hossain Yeaad said that the authorities have taken initiatives to implement a Tk10 crore project to solve the water logging problem in the municipal area. It will take at least two years to get rid of the situation, he added.
