Names of accused dropped while recording case

Murshida Parvin Lily
Trickery of policemen stands in the way of justice in a case for burning to death a woman in Chirirbandar upazila under Dinajpur, alleged the victim's father and son at a press conference in the district town yesterday. Murshida Parvin Lily, wife of Mohsin Ali, now working in Saudi Arabia, of Amtoli Chowkmusa village of Chirirbandar upazila, set afire allegedly by Lily's in-laws on February 28, succumbed to her injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital six days later. Lily's 12-year-old son Miskat Ali, accompanied by his grandfather Md Mofarrad Hossain (Lily's father), read out a written statement at the press conference, demanding arrest and punishment of his mother's killers. On March 8 this year, Lily's father Md Mofarrad Hossain, 60, lodged a complaint with Chirirbandar police station, stating that on February 28 his daughter's in-laws set fire to her after pouring kerosene on her body as she declined to give them money as per their demand. Receiving copy of the complaint, the policemen asked him to come the next day, goes the statement at the press conference. Next day, Mofarrad, an illiterate person, appeared at the police station where the policemen forwarded him a copy and asked him to sign on it. Then the policemen registered a case which was later found to have dropped the names of the accused, it adds. "Due to the trickery of the policemen, none of the accused has been arrested so far," said Mofarrad Hossain. As The Daily Star correspondent obtained copies of the complaint submitted by Mofarrad and the case statement drafted by Chirirbandar police, it was seen that the names of the accused mentioned in Mofarrad's complaint were missing in the case recorded by police. When contacted, Md Rezaul Karim, officer in charge of Chriribandar police station, refuted the allegation and said the investigation of the case is going on. Contacted, the superintendent of police said he will look into the allegation. "A high level inquiry should be conducted on the incident to uphold the image of police department," said a police officer of Dinajpur seeking anonymity.
