Sedition cases against 63 BGB men dropped
Sedition cases against 63 jawans of BGB (Border Guard Bangladesh) Satkhira and Shyamnagar battalions have been withdrawn as per decision of the home ministry.
Of the jawans, 27 are from BGB 41 Battalion at Satkhira Sadar while 36 from BGB 7 Battalion at Nildumur in Shyamnagar upazila.
Judge Sharif Uddin Azad of Additional District and Sessions Judge's Court relieved the jawans of sedition charges following an appeal made by Public Prosecutor (PP) advocate Mustafa Lutfullah, court sources said.
Following mutiny at the two battalions on February 26 in 2009, sedition cases were filed against the jawans on May 13 the same year.
The then officer-in-charge (OC) of Satkhira Sadar Police Station Kamruzzaman filed the sedition cases against 27 jawans of 41 Battalion with the Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court while the then officer-in-charge (OC) of Shyamnagar Police Station Matiar Rahman filed the cases against 36 jawans of 7 Battalion with the same court on the same day.
Immediately after filing of the sedition cases, the accused were arrested and produced in the Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court that sent them to jail hajat.
The complainants in the case statements said the jawans revolted against their officers at their respective battalions on Fenruary 26 in 2009, expressing solidarity with the mutineers of the BGB headquarters at Pilkhnana in the capital.
They looted firearms and ammunition from armouries, fired blank shots and took control of the battalions.
BGB special court sentenced 90 jawans of 41 Battalion and 56 jawans of 7 Battalion to different jail terms on March 2 and April 19 this year for their involvement in mutiny at their respective battalion on February 26 in 2009.
