Two convicts executed in Pabna, Gazipur jails

Two condemned convicts were executed in Pabna and Gazipur jails yesterday and the day before. A man sentenced to death for killing wife was executed at Pabna jail on Monday night, seven years after his conviction. He was identified as Solaiman Sheikh, 45, son of Foyz Uddin Sheikh of Dathia village in Bera upazila, reports our correspondent. A court sentenced Solaiman to death on October 10, 2004, for killing his wife. The convict had appealed against the verdict and begged President's mercy. But both were turned down. Solaiman was hanged to death at 11:01 pm by executioner Pabul Koyedi, 55, brought in Pabna from Jessore jail to do the job. This was the third execution in Pabna jail in nine years. With this, Pabul Koyedi has executed a total of 15 condemned convicts in his life. Solaiman's body was handed over to his family in the morning after post mortem. In Gazipur, another man, convicted for killing cop in 2002, was executed at Kashimpur central jail early yesterday, reports a correspondent. He was identified as Hazrat Ali, 35, son of Foyzul Haq of Shibchar upazila in Madaripur district. According to the case statement, Hazrat along with three others stabbed SI of CID Nazrul to death and snatched his belongings and revolver on July 26, 2002. On June 16, 2004, Hazrat Ali, and three accomplices were sentenced to death by a Speedy Trial Tribunal for the murder. Later, the higher courts overturned their appeal. Kashimpur (Unit-2) Jail Superintendent Subhash Chandra Ghosh said additional district magistrate Humayun Kabir, assistant police superintendent Abul Hossain were present at the time of execution.
