Gaibandha people form human chain for Brahmaputra bridge

Cross sections of people including students and businessmen yesterday formed a five-kilometerlong human chain across Gaibandha town to realise three-point demand including setting up of Brahmaputra multipurpose bridge. Organised by the Gaibandha Chamber of Commerce and Industries, traders joined the programme shutting down shops and business establishments, chanting slogans for immediate implementation of their demands. During the hour-long programme all sorts of vehicles went off the roads. The speakers at a rally followed by the human chain said, construction of a multipurpose bridge over the river Brahmaputra is needed for road and rail link between Balashi of Gaibandha and Bahadurabad of Jamalpur. It will ease communication with Dhaka, Mymensingh and Sylhet and act as an alternative to Bangabandhu bridge, they said. They also emphasised construction of a by-pass road across Gaibandha town to avoid frequent traffic jam and another bridge over river Teesta connecting Chilmari of Kurigram and Sundarganj in Gaibandha for better communication with capital city. The speakers further said that the regional highway that has been completed from Rangpur to Gaibandha should be extended up to Sirajganj. The programme was attended by people from all walks of life including municipal councilors, traders, journalists, students and transport workers. Those who spoke are Shahzada Anwarul Kadir, president, Gaibandha Chamber of Commerce, Gobinda Lal Das, president, Gaibandha Press Club, Masudur Rahman Shahan, president, Shop Owners' Association and Abdul Karim, president, Motor-Truck Sramik Union of Gaibandha.
