A human chain was formed at Biral upazila headquarters yesterday demanding election to Biral Sadr Union Parishad. Around 500 people, both male and female, of the union joined the two-kilometre-long human chain and then submitted a memorandum to the upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) demanding election to the union parishad. They also threatened to go for a tougher agitation if the demand was not met immediately. The election in the union was not held as the authorities concerned decided to make it a municipality and an appeal to stop the election still remains pending with the court. At the rally in front of the UNO office, the speakers urged the authorities concerned to take necessary steps to hold election in union. Meanwhile, at least 20 people were injured in a post-poll violence at Sharifpur village in Bhatipara union of Dirai upazila of Sunamganj district yesterday, reports UNB. Police said the supporters defeated chairman candidate Belal Ahmed beat up a supporter of his rival Lutfar Rahman in front of the registered primary school in the union at around 11:00am. As the news spread, the supporters of Rahman equipped with lethal weapons attacked Belal's men on the school premises, leading to a clash between the two groups. At least 20 people from both sides injured during the clash that continued for half an hour. Being informed, police rushed to the spot, dispersed the clashing groups and brought the situation under control. The injured are undergoing treatment at the upazila health complex.
