Post-UP poll clashes leave 90 injured in 3 districts

At least 90 people were injured in post-UP poll violence in Brahmanbaria, Jessore and Gopalganj districts yesterday and on Wednesday night. In Brahmanbaria, the supporters of two defeated chairman candidates clashed at Maligaon village in Sarail upazila yesterday morning, leaving at least 30 people from both sides injured, according to UNB. Locals said the clash ensued following an altercation over the recently held election results between the supporters of defeated chairman candidates Abdur Rahman and Sher Alam at the village at around 10:00am. Both sides used lethal weapons during the clash that continued for an hour. Being informed law enforcers from Sarail Police Station rushed to the spot, fired tear gas shells and dispersed the clashing groups. Post-poll violence in Kaiba Union under Sharsha upazila of Jessore district left at least 10 people injured yesterday morning, reports our Banapole correspondent. Officer-in-charge of Sharsha Police Station Aslam Khan said the supporters of defeated chairman candidates Firoz Hasan Tinku and Abul Hossain Bablu attacked each other over a trivial matter at Kaiba Bazar at around 10:00am, leaving at least 10 people from both sides injured. At one stage the feuding groups put up barricades on Jessore-Satkhira road, disrupting traffic for an hour. Police went to the spot, dispersed the rioters and removed barricades from the road. In Gopalganj, post-poll violence left at least 50 people injured at Mathpara village in Rugby Union of Moksudpur upazila on Wednesday. Sources said the supporters of member-elect Saidur Rahman Tutul and defeated candidate Golam Kibria Molla locked in an altercation over attending a function at the village, says our correspondent. At one stage, the supporters of Saidur and Kibria attacked each other. Both sides used lethal weapons during the clash that left at least 50 people from both sides injured On information, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. Of the injured, 30 were admitted to Rajoir Upazila Health Complex and other hospitals while the rest given first aid. No case in connection with the incident was filed with Moksudpur Police Station as of filing of this report ay 2:00pm yesterday.
