Killing of Baul on theft charge sparks protest

Several hundred villagers brought out a procession at Bashbaria bazaar under Galachipa upazila on Friday afternoon protesting murder of a Baul (mystic) artiste of Bashbaria village under same upazila. Local Baul artiste Kabir Hossain, 28, ran his 4-member family by rendering Baul songs in different places like weekly village markets, launch terminals, bus stands as he was a landless man. Nurun Nahar, wife of the victim and their two sons also took part in the procession. The processionists paraded different roads of the bazaar and later held a roadside rally. Kamiab Chowdhury, a social worker, Abdul Khaleq Gazi, headmaster of a registered primary school and Nurun Nahar, wife of the victim, addressed the meeting among others. The speakers at the rally demanded immediate arrest of main accused Ruhul Amin Gazi who went into hiding immediately after the murder. A local gang led by Ruhul Amin Gazi allegedly beat Kabir Hossain dead on charge of stealing a cell phone. Before beating he was called out of the house of his father-in-law at the village. Locals said, a cell phone went missing from the house of Ruhul Amin Gazi, a retired police constable of Bashbaria village on June 27 night. Ruhul on suspicion of Kabir's involvement, at about 6 in the morning, along with nephew Kamal Hossain called Kabir from the house and took him to his (Ruhul Amin) house. First they beat up Kabir. As Kabir still denied stealing the phone, at one stage Ruhul Amin hung Kabir from a branch of a banyan tree and continued beating. Kabir died on the spot and Ruhul Amin fled the scene. Police later arrested four accused including Kamal Hossain.
