Defeated candidate, his men sever leg of BNP activist

Criminals allegedly led by a ruling Awami League backed defeated union parishad (UP) chairman candidate severed the left leg of a BNP activist and badly stabbed his right leg at Modhupur village of Sarpukur union under Aditmari upazila in Lalmonirhat district on Tuesday night. The victim, Mozammel Haque, 60, son of late Sadar Uddin of Modhupur village in Sarpukur union under Aditmari upazila, is a retired army man and an executive member of Sarpukur union BNP. He worked for Monsur Ali, vice president of Aditmari upazila unit of BNP, during the campaign before June 14 UP election, said Monsur Ali, who won the seat of chairman of Sarpukur UP. After primary treatment at Lalmonirhat Sadar Hospital, Mozammel was referred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital. "Mozammel's left leg was severed and most part of the other leg was stabbed. His condition is critical due to serious bleeding. If sufficient blood is not available, it will be difficult to save his life,” said Dr Abdul Quader Gani, on duty doctor of the emergency ward. "Mozammel Haque was attacked alleged by Awami League supported defeated chairman candidate Azizul Haque Prodhan and his eight to ten men beside Burirjhar bridge at Modhupur village at around 9:30pm on Tuesday night," second officer of Aditmari police station SI Sobahan Miah quoted the family members as saying. "My husband told me he identified some attackers including defeated chairman candidate Azizul Haque Prodhan, his son Shimul Islam, younger brothers Shafiqul Islam, Rofiqul Islam and cousin Jamal Uddin,” Mozammel's wife Monowara Begum said. Family members were preparing to file a case accusing eight people including Azizul Haque Prodhan, said injured Mozammel's son Mazharul Anwar. Contacted, defeated chairman candidate Azizul Haque Prodhan, also the secretary of Aditmari upzila AL, said he or any of his workers were not involved with the attack on Mozammel.
