Recount of votes in 2 unions of Narail, Natore demanded
63 chairman, member aspirants fined
Voters blocked road in Lohagara upazila of Narail and formed a human chain in Bagatipara upazila of Natore yesterday demanding recounting of votes cast in the recently held union parishad elections in two unions of the upazilas.
Meanwhile, mobile courts fined 63 chairman and member aspirants in Karimganj and Pakundia upazilas of Kishoreganj districts on Monday for violating election code of conduct.
According to our Narail correspondent, around 3,000 villagers of Etna union blocked Lohagara-Narail Road for two hours from 12:30pm demanding recounting of votes cast at Etna High School centre during June 26 election in the union.
They also submitted a memorandum to Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Arun kumar Mondol, also the returning officer, and held a rally in front of his office.
Addressing the rally, the speakers, including defeated chairman candidate Nazmul Hasan Togor, alleged that Executive Magistrate Tobibur Rahman along with BGB personnel reached Etna High School centre where polling was going on peacefully.
Suddenly, the executive magistrate ordered law enforcers to charge batons on the people who came to cast their votes, they said, adding that at least 80 to 90 people, including ex-chairman of the same union Montu Sikdar, were injured in the attack and around 900 supporters of chairman Candidate Nazmul Hasan could not cast their votes.
They demanded action against the executive magistrate and a recount of votes of Etna High School polling centre immediately.
In Natore, a human chain was formed at Bagatipara upazila headquarters demanding a recount of votes cast at Nizpara Government Primary School centre in Jamnagar Union on June 8.
Around 1,000 voters joined the human chain in front of the UNO office at noon.
They alleged that elected chairman Hafiz Uddin manipulated the election results with the connivance of presiding and polling officers and snatched the victory of his rival candidate Abdul Quddus.
Refuting the allegation, Upazila Election Officer Fatema Khatun said the polling at the centre was held peacefully.
Our Kishoreganj correspondent adds: At least 63 UP candidates in Karimganj and Pakundia upazila were fined Tk 2.10 lakh on Monday for violating election code of conduct.
Two mobile courts led by Md Abdullah Hakkani, upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) of Karimganj, and Lutfunnahar, upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) of Pakundia fined the candidates for pasting posters on walls.
The mobile court led by Karimganj UNO Abdullah Hakkani fined 15 chairman aspirants, 16 member candidates and eight candidates for women reserved seats for violating election rules in different unions of the upazila and realised Tk 1.32 lakh from them.
The court also sentenced five people to five days imprisonment each for the same offence. The convicts are Mosharraf Hossain, 47, Md Siddique Mia, 50, Md Jalal Uddin, 52, Abul Kashem, 40 and Mozammel Haque, 33.
The court led by Pakundia UNO Lutfunnahar fined three chairman and 21 member candidates in Chandipasha Union of the upazila and realised Tk 78,000 from them.
