Try killers of Patradoot editor, demand Satkhira newsmen
Local journalists of national, regional and local dailies and electronics media yesterday brought out a procession, held a rally and submitted a memorandum to the prime minister (PM) through the DC demanding speedy trial of the Daily Patrdoot editor SM Ala Uddin murder case and security of the witnesses in the case.
SM Ala Uddin was shot dead by assailants while discharging his professional duties at the office of the daily in Pransayer area in the town on June 19 in 1996.
The speakers at the rally said that the murder case was quashed by High Court in 1998.
The Supreme Court rejected the quashment order and asked the lower court to resume the trial on March 11 in 1999, they said.
Later, accused Khalilullah Jhharu and Abdus Sabur filed an appeal petition before a bench of the High Court Division of the Supreme Court with a prayer to shift the trial court from Satkhira.
After hearing, the High Court's Division bench rejected the prayer on November 7 in 2007.
On July 26 in 2009, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court rejected the prayer and the copy of the order reached the judge's court on September 30 in 2010.
After 14 years 8 month of the murder, trial of the murder case finally began as the court recorded the statement of the prosecution witnesses on February 17 last.
But the witnesses of the case are now showing reluctance to give deposition before the court as the accused are threatening them, they said.
