Bus strike in Satkhira
Bus owners and transport workers jointly enforced an indefinite bus strike on Satkhira-Munshiganj road via Kaliganj and Debhata upazilas yesterday protesting assault on 25 transport workers and damaging of 13 buses by students on June 19.
The strike disrupted movement of vehicles between the district and Shyamnagar, Kaliganj and Debhata upazilas.
The protesters were also demanding withdrawal of 'false' cases filed against transport workers by the students and arrest of students who attacked transport workers and damaged buses.
Kaliganj Bus-Minibus Owners' Association and Kaliganj Motor Shramik Union enforced the bus strike.
The transport workers and Shyamnagar Mohsin College students locked in a clash in front of the college following an altercation over realising of excess bus fare from a student by bus conductor on June 19.
Both transport workers and students used lethal weapons during the clash that lasted for about an hour.
The students damaged 13 buses and assaulted 25 workers during the clash.
Transport workers also injured at least 10 students. They also damaged the office of the principal and classrooms of the college.
Later, the transport workers and students filed separate cases with Shyamnagar PS accusing each others.
The strike was continuing till filing of this report 4:15 pm yesterday.
