Poll official jailed, over 100 hurt in violence

A presiding officer was jailed for violating election code of conduct in Mymensingh while over 100 people were injured in UP poll-related violence in Narsingdi, Munshiganj, Madaripur and Pabna districts yesterday. Our Mymensingh correspondent reported that a mobile court led by Assistant Commissioner (land) Lokman Hossain of Muktagachha upazila sentenced the presiding officer of Kandulia Registered Primary School centre in Kumargata Union to three days imprisonment for violating election rules. Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Muktagachha Police Station Raqibul Haque said police arrested Presiding Officer Abdul Kakim, 45, also the Project Implementation Officer (PIO) of the upazila, on charge of having meal at a house near the polling centre. He was produced before the mobile court that sent him to jail for violating election code of conduct. Peaceful voting at the centre took place yesterday. In Narsingdi, the supporters of a chairman-elect and a defeated candidate clashed in Raipura upazila yesterday, leaving at least 50 people from both sides injured. Of the injured, 10 were admitted to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital while the rest to Nabinagar and Bhairab upazila health complexs. Witnesses said hundreds of people of Sonakandi, Amirabad, Birgaon and Nilakhya supporting chairman-elect Abdul Haq Sarkar and defeated chairman candidate Ismail Hossain locked in a clash at Nilakhya at around 1:00pm, reports UNB. The clashing groups used spears and sharp weapons and vandalised at least 50 houses. Being informed, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. Our Munshiganj correspondent reports: At least 20 people were injured in a clash between the supporters of two member candidates near Sambhu Haldarkandi Government Primary School polling centre under Sadar upazila during yesterday's election to Bangla Bazar Union Parishd. Witnesses said the clash ensued following an altercation between the supporters of the member candidates over seeking votes from the villagers. In Pabna, post-poll clashes in sujanagar upazila yesterday left 30 people injured, according to our correspondent. Of the injured, 15 were admitted to Sujanagar Upazila Health Complex while the rest given first aid. The supporters of defeated candidates Nowab Ali Mondol and Abdul Barik Bablu clashed at Udoypur village in Nazirpur Union, leaving at least 15 people from both sides injured. At Fakirpur village in Satbaria Union, the supporters of defeated member candidate Md Abdul Kuddus attacked the house of his rival candidate Abdul Baten. At least 10 people, including Abdul Baten, his wife Monwara Khatun and daughter Shukhi Khatun, were injured in the attack. They are undergoing treatment at Sujnagara Upazila Health Complex. The supporters of defeated member candidate Md Rafik Mondol attacked the houses of their rivals at Momrajpur village in the same union, leaving at least 10 people injured. In Madaripur, At least 10 people were injured in a clash between the supporters of two defeated member candidates in Shashikar Union under Kalkini upazila in the morning. Shahin Mondal, officer-in-charge of Kalkini Police Station said the incident occurred when the supporters of Mintu Sarker swooped on the workers Bibhuti Bushan, leaving at least 10 people from the both sides injured . On information, police rushed to the spot, charged batons on the clashing groups and brought the situation under control.
